Sermon on seven sayings
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today I want to reflect on the seven sayings of Jesus Christ on the cross. These seven powerful statements reveal the depth of His love, compassion, and forgiveness for all of humanity. Let us take a moment to meditate on each of these sayings and draw inspiration and strength from them.
The first saying of Jesus on the cross is "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." Despite the pain and suffering He was enduring, Jesus showed us the ultimate example of forgiveness. He prayed for those who were crucifying Him, demonstrating His boundless love and mercy.
The second saying is "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise." Jesus spoke these words to the criminal who was crucified next to Him, showing us that no one is beyond redemption. Even in His darkest hour, Jesus offered the promise of salvation to a repentant sinner.
The third saying is "Woman, here is your son... Here is your mother." In this statement, Jesus entrusted the care of His mother Mary to the disciple John, symbolizing the importance of community and family in the life of a believer. Jesus reminds us to care for one another and to build strong relationships within the body of Christ.
The fourth saying is "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" In this moment of deep anguish, Jesus expressed His human emotions of feeling abandoned by God. This cry of despair reminds us that Jesus understands our pain and suffering, and He is with us in our darkest moments.
The fifth saying is "I am thirsty." In His physical thirst, Jesus experienced the limitations of His human body. This statement reminds us of the humanity of Christ and His willingness to endure suffering for the sake of our salvation.
The sixth saying is "It is finished." With these words, Jesus declared that His mission on earth was accomplished. He had fulfilled the will of the Father by offering Himself as a sacrifice for the sins of the world. This statement signifies the victory of Christ over sin and death.
The seventh and final saying is "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit." With these words, Jesus surrendered His life into the hands of the Father, trusting in His divine plan. This statement teaches us to place our trust in God, even in the face of death, knowing that He is in control of our lives.
As we reflect on these seven sayings of Jesus on the cross, let us be reminded of the depth of His love, the power of His forgiveness, and the victory of His resurrection. May we draw strength and inspiration from His words as we journey through our own trials and tribulations. Amen.
